Services were held, Thursday, July 24, from the First United Presbyterian Church for Charles E. Bassett, 73, of 714 South Cottonwood, North Platte, Nebraska, who passed away Saturday, July 19, in a North Platte hospital.

Charles E. Bassett, was born December 9, 1910, at Callaway, where he attended school.
He lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, from 1949 until 1972 when he moved to North Platte where he had resided since.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his widow, Hazel; one son, Robert of North Platte; two brothers, Roy of Napa, Idaho and Percy of Orange, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Charles W. Bassett, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Turner) Bassett, was born in Dec 1857/8 in England. He died in 1932. He married Fanny H. Tschudi about 1880. Fanny H. was born in Connecticut in Apr 1862. Charles Immigrated to the United States in 1871. They are both buried in the Arnold Cemetery in Arnold, Custer County, Nebraska, located one mile south of Arnold just off of Highway 40.
He is listed in the Custer County Farmers & Ranchers (1886) as C.W. Bassett of Cliff.


Charles W. Bassett, Pioneer Resident, Called by Death

Charles W. Bassett, was born in England, December 8, 1858, and died at his home in Arnold, Nebraska, June 18, 1932, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 8 days. He was baptized and became a member of the Episcopal church in infancy.
Mr. Bassett came to this country with his parents when he was five years of age. The family settled first at Toronto, Canada, where they remained for a short time, moving to Marquette, Michigan, then to Decatur, Illinois, and subsequently to Schuyler, Nebraska.
Charles W. Bassett was married to Fanny Tschudi on September 21, 1879, at Guide Rock, Nebraska. He was an early pioneer of Custer county, having filed on a homestead in the Pine Canyon neighborhood in 1883 and resided there until he retired from active work in 1915. At that time he moved to Arnold and remained here until death claimed him.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett were the parents of fourteen children: Frank Bassett now lives at Ponce Coupe, British Columbia; Jess, Edwin and Floyd at Paxton, Nebraska; Will, Sidney, Clifford and Mrs. Sherman Sheets at Arnold, Nebraska; Mrs. George Harris at Brule, Nebraska; and Mrs. Clay Harper at Burns, Wyoming. Four children preceded their father in death.
There remain to mourn, his wife and children, also twenty-three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters, and a host of friends.
Mr. Bassett was a devoted husband and a loving father, whose good and manly qualities made him respected and admired by all who knew him. His friends as well as his family will miss him greatly.
"Those vacant charis, we'll find them here,
'Mid other griefs here given;
Nor vacant chairs in Heaven."

Funeral services were held at the family home in Arnold, Monday, June 20th, in charge of Rev. A.W. Judd, pastor of the Baptist church. All of Mr. Bassett's living children were able to be present at the funeral excepting one son, Frank, whose home is in Canada. Mrs. George Bailey, Mrs. John Melton, P.G. Houghton and L. M. Brewer sang three songs, accompanied at the organ by Miss Genevieve McGuire. Pall bearers were A.J. McCants, John Melton, Ed Miller, S.J. Medlin, Chalres Fisher and Lewis Nansel.
Interment was made in the Arnold cemetery.
